According to the tribal poets chronicles, this is impressed by Jam Lakhaji's role in at the blockade of Pavagadh, Bahadurshah, the Emperor of Gujarat, gifted 12 villages to him. As Jam Lakaji was going to take control of his new region, he was dishonestly killed by his cousins, Tamachi Deda and Hamirji Jadeja.
The Jam Lakhajis son Jam Rawal however escaped somehow and after growing up took revenge of his father's murder in the same manner by killing Hamirji Jadeja. The two sons of Hamirji Jadeja, Khengarji and Sahibji ran away to Delhi to pay deferential respect to the mughal Emperor Humayun. During a lion hunt, Khengarji and Sahibji saved the Emperor from being killed by a lion. As a prize for their great courage, an army was sent with both the brothers to recapture their kingdom. When the son of Jam Lakhaji, Jam Rawal got information about the two brothers, Khengarji and Sahibji coming back to the Kutch with their royal army, he started getting ready for the war. At one night, Jam Rawal dreamt of the goddess Ashapura who told Jam Rawal that as he had broken a solemn promise taken on her name about not murdering Hamirji, even though, he was the person who had killed his father. She had avoided from punishing him as he had at all other times respected her, so he was no longer allowed to live in Kutch, instead cross the sea and inhabit in the Kathiawar.
The Jam Rawal and his bodyguards and followers marched out of Kutch and attacked and killed King Tamachi the other person who was responsible in the assassination of his father, and took control of the town of Dhrol and its dependencies. The Jam Rawal gifted the rule of Dhrol province to his brother Hardholji, who was later murdered in battle, and the sovereignty was passed to his eldest son, Jasoji. The Jam Rawal took control of some parts of Saurashtra and established his kingdom.
Once during the Jam Rawal's hunting trip on the land which is presently known as Jamnagar, Jam Rawal saw a hare that was brave enough to turn on the hunting dogs and putting them to fight. Extremely impressed by this scene, Jam Rawal thought that if this land can breed such hares, the men born here would be brave than any other men, and therefore Jam Rawal made this place his capital. On the 7th day of the month of Shravan, VS 1956 (August 1540 AD) on the banks of two rivers Nagmati and Rangmati, he established his new capital and named it Nawanagar. Nawanagar finally came to be known as Jamnagar meaning the town of the Jams. Thus, the history in Jamnagar Gujarat is very enthralling.
